Spiced Mulled Wine
Mulled Wine is a perfect mid-winter beverage, loved throughout history and all over the globe. This warm, aromatic drink can be enjoyed any time of the year.
Ingredients;
- 2 bottles of red wine (suggestions: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot)
- 3 oranges, finely sliced,
- 2 cups of apple juice,
- 3 cinnamon sticks,
- 2 whole star anise,
- 8-10 whole cloves,
- 1 vanilla pod,
- 3/4 cup honey or sugar,
- 1/2 cup brandy or port.
Directions;
Step 1: Combine all of the ingredients, excluding wine and liquor, in a large pot.
Step 2: Gently simmer the ingredients on low to medium heat for 15-20 minutes stirring until the honey or sugar has dissolved.
Step 3: Reduce heat to low and add wine and liquor. Cook gently on a low heat for a further 5-10 minutes until warm. Do not boil as this removes the alcohol.
Step 4: Strain off the spices and orange. Pour spiced mulled wine into glasses (makes 10) and serve hot with a fresh slice of orange.
Once made, it can be kept warm in a slow cooker if catering for a crowd.
Want an alcohol free version? Simply add 2 cups of grape juice.
